Meet the Editor

Tormod Guldvog is the founder and editor of Hypography Sci-Tech. Here he presents himself and why this science gateway is so important to him.
I have been interested in science and technology since before I can remember. My dad was an editor for a radio and television magazine back in the seventies, and one of my fondest memories is when I got to draw a picture of Skylab for their front page.
My dad owned a copy of Steven Weinberg?s "The First Three Minutes" - and although I was too young to read it at the time, I remember how the title made me think about things. That the Cosmos had a beginning! And worse - that it might end! My dad and I used to watch Carl Sagan?s TV documentary series, "Cosmos". I think that was perhaps the most important thing about science for me: that someone like Carl Sagan could know so much, and surely he looked just like my dad...
My education and career did not pass through any of the sciences, though, I followed a family tradition and became a musician instead. I graduated from Augustana College in 1992, with a Bachelor of Music Performance. Later I also finished a Bachelor?s degree in English literature, just to be sure.
One day, as I sat in the Augustana College Library in 1992, I picked up a copy of Scientific American - I think it had a feature on superstring theory. It brought back fond memories from my childhood, and during the past ten years I have been listening to my desires and read everything I can get my hands on when it comes to science.
I had this vision that one day I might make a living working for a popular science magazine. To me, science has no meaning if it is not made available to everyone who wants to learn about it. I somehow found a purpose in communicating news about science to everyone. Since I have had jobs as a journalist and editor, I at least have the ability to write and communicate.
So when I started Hypography Sci-Tech, it was a dream come true. I am now the proud editor of a science gateway! The "make a living" part is still far off, since I pay for everything myself, but I run a small company doing web consulting and project management, so that I make enough money to keep Hypography a free-for-all service.
I do most of the work at Hypography, including designing web pages, creating illustrations, writing reviews and so on, although I have had the aid of a freelancer to collect links, and a number of volunteer contributors who produce and collect content. Lately my wife, Yvonne, has been helping out by publishing news stories. I also am a website reviewer for the New Scientist website (look for my reviews, which have my initials, "TG").
At the time of writing, March 2001, I am 30 years old and married to Yvonne. We live in Oslo, Norway, and our wonderful baby daughter, Jenny, was born on Christmas Eve 2000. If you?d like to get in touch with me, you may send me e-mail at my private e-mail address, tormod@guldvog.com.
