But where did you read that they found canals on the moon?
There's not only *traces* of water - both Mars and the moon has *lots* of it. And there are plenty of moons around the gas giants (Jupiter, Saturn) that have plenty of water ice as well, and possibly liquid oceans. The Deep Impact mission last summer also showed that comets can contain vast amounts of water. So the water was probably present in the solar system even before the planets formed.
