Yeah it is freaky to think about. I once tried to talk about it with other people who watched stargate, and they could not understand what I was saying.
If the consiousness is local to the body and does not transfer to the other body, then every time someone used a teleporter they would die and a new consiousness would be born that just happened to have all the same memories (including stepping through the teleporter)
And like ron said, there would be no way to tell except for that when you stepped in the stargate YOU would suddenly be dead, where here you means not your externally observable person, but your actual consiousness.
