My guess is that people don't know anything to begin with and so lose interest in anything science.

I had a friend over at the time of the science channel coverage and he saw it as rediculous. Its a shame society in america is more worried about reality tv and celebrity spending. I really wish more people were conserned with the betterment of the race and planet.

Ridiculous? How is it even possible to think that such extraordinary and aweinspiring missions in space are ridiculous? Are people really that antiscience? I mean I knew that people basically know nothing about science, but...
As for reality TV... holy crap. Don't get me started. When it began a few years ago I thought that there was no way something so stupid could ever catch on. Given humankind's historic records regarding stupid actions I should've known better. Now such "reality" shows are the only things we see. TV has deteriorated rapidly, and it seems to me that people only make the decay go faster and faster - for whatever reason. It is a fantastic medium that doesn't live up to its potential. Keep the people ignorant and entertained.
