tell them to put any windows XP cd into their macheine, load from the Cd, and run "automated system recovery" if that doesn't work (and maby even if it does) it tell me that the laptop has been bounced around without being properly "shut down" causing the hard drive(s) to suffer some physical damage.

If/when he gets it working I recommend a full scan and defragmentation of the drive ,and if there are many errors, to replace the drive with a new one (they're fairly cheap.)

Hypography?
