Well the "comparison" word was another clue as the song was written and originally performed by Gene McDaniels and was titled "Compared to What". It was most famously covered by Roberta Flack and especially noteworthy (and worth a visit to YouTube) is Les McCann and Eddy Harris' killer fusion version.

I knew right away it was Procul Harum as I am a long time fan of almost anything Robin Trower has ever done and still does. I wracked my brain for the album or song title because iirc it came out after the "Whiter Shade of Pale" album. I'm pretty sure it is "Conquistador".
