i thought joe smith's description in the book of morman pretty well described the plates, but more importanty the device to 'read' them. he describes 'bows of silver' on a breastplate he had to wear/use, and considering the telegraph was around then, i think he was taking some actual modern technology and embellishing it for his new story. bows of silver represent, in my view, coils of wire. the other components of the disk-record-schema have similar explanations.
