Richard Dawkins offers a slightly different tack again and is pretty readable, as are Matt Ridley and Steven Pinker. Try Richard's famous "The Selfish Gene" and say "The Blind Watchmaker" for a solid introduction in lay language of a common take on present day evolutionary theory.For up to dates on the current debates try Steven's "The Blank Slate" then Matt's "Nature via Nuture". cheers gub
