Maybe that's because the definition can be kind of fuzzy. Generally, in species that reproduce through sex, as opposed to something like cell division, populations that cannot reproduce via sex are considered seperate species. OTOH, there are a few cases of seperate species that can reproduce sexually, i.e. horses and donkeys or dogs and wolves for example. You might enjoy reading
