As long as one doesn't have neurological or neurodegenerative disorders, it's usually caused by electrolyte imbalances, lactic acid buildup or from poor circulation, ie. sitting to long, tight shoes, etc.

Calcium, magnesium and protein can help, along with vit E for circulation. If the spasms get worse with Cal and Mag, try a higher protein diet and Vit C to help reduce the high levels of Cal.
Potassium and sodium (found in sports drinks) helps for exercise induced spasms.
