I think there is some confusion here.
Member articles and papers are different than news articles. A member article is something that you write yourself. Anyone is able to post these to the correct forum. The news articles (besides news in brief) can only be posted by members of the editorial staff. The reason for this is that the article posted in news forums are automatically added to the portal (main page) of the site. There is a special format that is followed to make everything look good and it would probably require a lot of moderation if we let just anybody post news articles.
No, those are correctly posted in the News in Brief forum.
What Freezy means is that your articles (the ones you write yourself!) go in the Member Articles forums. Only press releases or articles written by the editorial staff can be posted in the "Science News" forums (apart from the News in Brief, as you have found out).
