Upcoming domain change
Upcoming domain change

Due to endless problems with search engine indexing and also the hazzle of maintaing two different domains, we are soon going to change domain names again. We will use the address hypography.com/forums as our main domain for the science forums. It shows famliarity with our portal at www.hypography.com, and also hopefully makes our site more acceptable by Google, who seems to hate us with their guts. It is a shame that Google has become a dictator of how webmasters must name their sites, but if we want to attract new members and visitors we need to be found. We therefore hope that our established domain, hypography.com, will help us out here. The scienceforums.com domain will remain, it will work, but it will immediately redirect you to the same page at the new domain. This has some implications: Your login and password will not be remembered by the site. You will therefore need to re-login if you (like me) usually have the login set to "remember me". Note: If you forget your password, you need to have it reset. This is not hard to do, but please make sure to check that the e-mail you have used in your User CP is up-to-date. If not, make sure you change it! There is no reason to wait with this change so expect it to happen soon. So double-check that e-mail address. We will be unable to retrieve your passwords for you, so you can save our team a lot of time by checking that your registered e-mail is correct. :)

Important: Upgrade Info
Important: Upgrade Info

This Saturday, November 26, we will be upgrading the Hypography Science Forums to a new version of the forum software. We will take down the forums Friday night, US time, and keep working until we get through our long list of things to take care of. Don't panic - the site will come back up, but we need to keep it closed until everything is fixed so we don't get database corruption problems. I want to let you know that some features will NOT work immediately after the upgrade, but we will fix these over the coming weeks. Hopefully you will find the new version to be a big improvement over today's version, so that you can live with the lack of certain features. Nothing big will disappear, except the Puzzle Store, which will be closed for a while, and the Science Links directory which will be removed (it already exists over at hypography.com on a different version). The Quiz Section will also vanish, because frankly it isn't working as we hoped, and the old one over at hypography.com/quizfront.cfm is working great (and gets tons more traffic). We will also change the way the science news are duplicated over at hypography.com in order to avoid too much duplicate content, which we think Google is penalizing us for. The classifieds will remain (hopefully), as will the gallery and the portal system. We will also get a completely new look, so take a long, hard look at the current design because it will no longer be available after Saturday. We might not get all of this set up in time either, but we will focus on getting the forums back up as soon as possible, while making sure that any buggy sections are put on hold until we can fix them. We will not rush things which turn out to be problematic. Sponsors may find that they will see advertisements for a few days - but they will disappear again ASAP. Some other missing things will be minor hacks and fixes - some of which are no longer needed, and some which need rewriting. An entirely new Article and Reviews system will be installed, so for those who have joined our new editorial team, things will start rolling very soon. It will also be possible for members to submit articles and reviews of their own for publication, something I think and hope several of you will find to be of interest. Wish us luck - it will take the better part of maybe 10-12 hours, but we will get there. Regards, Tormod and Killean

70K Challenge!
70K Challenge!

For my birthday yesterday I posed a challenge: Make us reach 70,000 posts by the end of November 22 (midnight) EST and I will donate $100 to the Chrysalid: Katrina Relief CD project. Due to the really hard work some of the folks put into this, Ihave extended the deadline to 3pm EST today (Wednesday)! So there is still a fair chance to make it! In addition, all money made from people who sign up for Science Forum Sponsorships today will also go straight to the project. What is the Katrina Relief CD project? It is a project where 40 musicians from all over the world have teamed up to create a unique double CD. All the proceeds will be shared between the Red Cross and Habitat for Humanity. So far we have raised $4,000 - even before the CD is finished! When the master was delivered for manufacturing last week, we had taken 171 paid preorders! Read more about the Katrina Relief CD project here: http://www.katrinareliefcd.com/ Read more about our subscriptions here: http://hypography.com/forums/showthread.php?t=3622 And please...no post padding, please. :)

This is a SCIENCE site!
This is a SCIENCE site!

While most here are open to ideas and questions from just about any point of view, we must also realize the purpose and nature of this specific site. This is a science site, devoted to the exploration and discussion of scientific ideas. This being said, this is not a soapbox nor a pulpit. I understand that there are theological theories and implication in some of the topics discussed here and there is a forum that is deadicated to that purpose (The Theology Forum). That being said, I feel that the remaining forums are not the place to continually have such debates. There are rules for this site and theologically backed statements are not really appropriate in the scientific realm. As a refresher for those that have forgotten or not read them... The bolded portion have been added by myself. These seem to be the areas in which many posters are having the most problem with. As a moderator, I will be enforcing these rules. Do not be surprise to find a closed thread or a deleted post for failure to comply to the above guidelines.

Katrina Relief CD - please buy!
Katrina Relief CD - please buy!

Dear friends - I am participating in a project called The Musicians for Katrina Relief CD. It will be a double CD made professionally, with original music (probably more than 40 tracks!) from musicians world-wide. http://www.katrinareliefcd.com/Katrina3.jpgThe cost of a CD is $25 including shipping *anywhere*. I have volunteered to handle the money side and therefore we are using Hypography's PayPal solution. A new website has been created at http://www.katrinareliefcd.com - I urge each and every one of you to go in there and preorder a CD for yourself - and also a few for your friends, if you can... 100% of the proceeds will go to charity - half to the Red Cross and half to Habitat for Humanity. We need to have 100 preorders to fully finance the pressing of the CDs. We will keep the website updated with how many preorders we have. Personally I have ordered 10 and plan on using these for Christmas gifts.

Support Katrina Victims
Support Katrina Victims

Tormod started a thread in the Admin forum, linking to the Red Cross. www.redcross.org That's a great idea, and I hope that some of you guys will consider donating to this cause. I'm sure that many of you have seen the widespread devastation of New Orleans, Biloxi, Gulfport, and other towns/cities in the Gulf area. The cleanup will take a massive and combined effort, and it will not be a quick thing. This tragedy strikes very close to home for me. My younger brother and his daughter live in New Orleans. They were able to get as far as Baton Rouge on Saturday. They now have made it to Lafayette. However, it will be at least weeks before he can get back in to see what they have left. And it could be at least a year before the place is livable again. So his 30th birthday (9/7) is going to be a bummer, to say the least. He's staying with friends, looking for a job, and trying to figure out what the heck to do about college. Needless to say, his normal birthday presents of golf accessories will be replaced by a 'hurricane relief' check from Virginia (and Oklahoma, according to my Grandma, who NEVER sends money to 'big' kids! ). If any of you know people in the area, I would encourage you to send what you can, as FEMA and other relief efforts will take time. My niece is getting a Wal-Mart gift card for her birthday (9/15), so she can pick ot what she most wants. If you have people in the area, or you live near the area, and are willing, please share your stories here. Seeing the people on tv is not quite the same as knowing personal stories.

Another New Administrator!!!
Another New Administrator!!!

Twice in one day is almost too much to hope for, but... pgrmdave has agreed to join the Administrator team!!! Dave has been a member for quite some time. He was quickly recognized as very reliable, and was asked to be a Moderator within a month or so of joining. He's consistently shown that he can handle the tough stuff, he's worked on more than a few of the upgrades, and he can always be counted on for his cool head and interesting point of view. Please join us in welcoming him to the Admin team!! WELCOME, DAVE!!!

New Administrator
New Administrator

I just LOVE getting to spread the good news... :hihi: KILLEAN has been made a full Administrator!!! We decided that his hard work and supreme dedication to this site has earned him at least that much. I tried to throw one of the kids into the deal, but I don't know if that's allowed or not, so he has to just settle for the new little "Admin" tag under his name. In case you guys don't already know, Killean is responsible for quite a few of the features that you see around the site. He spends months at a time in DeepHackMode, bringing us upgrades and fixes gallore. We'd have a very difficult time around here without him. So I'm sure you'll all agree that this is a well deserved and very long overdue promotion. Killean - you so totally rock!!
