I am taking my first vacation in an extremely long time...two weeks in a place where there is no Internet, no phones (but a TV http://www.hypography.com/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif It *is* Euro 2004 football right now!). I am leaving the forums in the able hands of Freethinker and IrishEyes, who will moderate with iron fists and make sure all of you behave. Obviously the main site will not be updated on a daily basis, either - but for everyone who is a forum member, you can actually post content if you just go here: http://www.hypography.com/member.cfm - it may take a while to figure it out (tutorials are forthcoming) but if anyone wants to give it a shot feel free. Note that you must use either IE 6, Mozilla, Netscape 7.1 or Firefox because there is a WYSIWYG content editor which requires these browsers. You can even work on a Mac (but not with IE). I have switched ad agency and they promised the popups would only display once every 48 hours on average per user. I have gotten a few mails from some of you who have just received tons of popups. I got about 25 of them in the past 12 hours myself. I have turned them off until the agency can figure out what happened... I'm *really* sorry about this - I dislike popups as much as anyone but I am sure there must have been a technical glitch here. Tormod

Thanks to Fusetalk, the manufacturer of these forums, I finally managed to complete the upgrade of this site. There were some technical issues with the imported data from the old forums. A big thanks to Michael at Fusetalk for his assistance. I am sure some people will yell at me since their passwords no longer work, but I think I have posted 3-4 places now how to retrieve the new passwords. I plan to make some tutorials about how to publish your own content at Hypography, but right now I need to put programming and development on hold and concentrate on getting some new content out. And...if you should suffer from an occasional popup ad - Hypography has switched advertising agency so no more Googleads. I have been promised that the popus will be kept at a minimum - feel free to tell me if it becomes annoying! Remember that the ads pay for hosting, software, development servers etc, so we depend 100% on advertising (until someone buys Hypography.com for a trillion dollars). Tormod

Thanks to the developers of these forums, I am ready to perform the final part of the forums upgrade. This involves removing the login functionality of the forums, and enabling all current forum users to log in via the front page of Hypography. At the same time, you will all be able to contribute content to Hypography, like articles, hypographies, links, press releases and (in a while) quizzes. This upgrade has one very important side effect: Since all passwords are encrypted, not even I can get them out of the database. Therefore all passwords will be reset. After the upgrade, I will attempt to send out an e-mail to all users with their new password. However, since some of the e-mails in our database are no longer working, some of you will not get this information. I will also update this post with information as to how you can retrieve you passwords when I have finished the upgrade. So - cross your fingers - let's hope it works this time around. As you may have noticed, Hypography has a new look. The site was redesigned from the ground up, and I hope you folks like it! I had big problems making the new version of the forums, work, however, and I simply have to concentrate on other things for a little while (I have spent hundreds of hours on this upgrade...). So I hope you find it acceptable that the old forums work JUST like before! Feel free to post your comment about the new look here. Tormod

The weekend of May 14-17 Hypography will be down for long periods of time. The entire site will be upgraded, and a new version of the forums will be installed. No posts will be lost. After the upgrade, the login procedure will be slightly different, but I will explain everything after the upgrade. I am very exited about this upgrade, as I have put a lot of work into it. To all our users: An upgrade of the forums to a new version is forthcoming. This upgrade is important because 1) All forum members will also become website members (ie, what we call contributors) 2) All who have signed up as contributors become members of the forums. 3) The forums will be quicker, more customizable and generally look better! If you have made any preference settings in your profile they may be lost, because I need to set some default values for the forums to work the first ime everyone logs in. Also, some users will find that their password no longer works, in which case there will be a password retrieval function which generates a new password. Inevitably, some of you will experience problems and I'll do my best to solve them. This is also a good time to let me know if there are any features you would like to see in the forums - like e-mail posting, better subscription features, more polls etc. Post your comments here if you have any suggestions and I will try my best to incorporate them into the upgrade (or in any future revisions). Is it just me or are the forums loading _very_ slowly now? I have a new version installed on my dev server (it is way quicker, I think)but wanted tohold ituntil the rest of the site is finished. But now it takes extremely long for me to get the pages up... Could be that I'm sitting in Norway. Do you guys get good response times? Are the forums loading fast or slow? Tormod

Dear folks - I am thinking of jumping on the blog bandwagon and put together a Hypography blog. The blog will be an important feature at Hypography - it will be the main feature on the front page, and it will be updated daily. The content will partly consist of comments about ongoing events, news and headlines, and partly links to new stuff at Hypography which will be published by the same bloggers. All this means that I want this to be done in a semi-professional manner. I need at least 5-10 volunteers who would like to help me get this idea going. I want to set up a discussion group for beta-bloggers, and start a trial blogging period so we can test the idea and see how well it goes. At the same time, a new design will be implemented and tried out for the entire website, so this will be an important step forward for Hypography. If you would like to help Noah and myself make this happen, please send an e-mail to me at editor@hypography.com and tell me what you think you can contribute with. If you have a website or a blog already, let me know. I will get in touch with each of you and set things up. Taking part in this will make you visible to a lot of people. Hypography has a regular user base of thousands of people. We have about 200,000 visitors per month, and some 1,000,000 page impressions. So the blog must be good for us to succeed with it! Please contact me about this ONLY if you think you will be able to contribute on a regular basis, which means AT LEAST 1-2 times a week, plus taking part in the online discussion in our forums. You must also be able to write legibly in ENGLISH and you should have a general interest in both popular science, science writing and the main topics at Hypography (astronomy, cosmology, earth science, space exploration, philosophy...well...anything, as long as it is _science_).
