The inflationary free lunch is a voyage from minimalism to maximalism: then back again. It shares with conceptualism a cool, detached faith in flatness today; it gravitates toward facile, not outlandish. It doesn't sound as feasible as one might imagine, but it is inspiring stuff - food for thought, at least, next time you find yourself staring absentmindedly at the tab in the chic culinary capital of Great Britain (Cambridge), or somewhere near M.I.T.

With a certain obvious logic, lost to some modern vegans, inflation is a poor substitute for the skilled shopping of the past. The artificial flavoring added to the free lunch sounds suspiciously harmless and greaseproof (but not weed-proof).

However, even when chewed thoroughly, inflation, like superstring spaghetti less than al dente, has little (nothing) to offer: except for a healthy dose of fragmentary dissent and antacid to wash whatever was eaten down. It doesn't stick on my wall.

How about on yours?
