Thumbs down Name a Star hoax

Now they even sell star names in shops. I wasn't aware that this scam had gotten so far:

Before you order, read this:
http://www.iau.org/IAU/FAQ/starnames.html

They "forget" to tell the buyers about that, obviously. Wonder if that is enough for any customer to ask for a refund?

Re: Name a Star hoax

I wonder how great a gift it would be if they knew it wasn't for real. Sure they might find it a nice gesture and then it's ok I suppose, but I am sure a lot of people are fooled by this, and they wont be happy when they realise that it's not for real. I would rather buy a book on astronomy to someone.

Yeah true, it's not like you'll be able to see the star easily... Do you think they re-sell the same start to someone else?

Stargazer

Sadly I seem to recall that Arthur C. Clark was wrong. When the Americans went to the moon they bloody well made sure to bring an american flag that would wave in a vacuum. Sigh.

Here we go. Pictures of the flag flying in the (non-existent) wind:

Well it didn't wave forever, its fabric did move but that was just shortly after the astronauts have pushed the flagpole into the soil. The did construct the flagpole so that the flag would look like it waved. Nevertheless, the spirit of the quote is good.

A bit like the scam where you could own a piece of the moon.

Talking Re: Name a Star hoax

I have ordered this a couple of times as a gift. It has worked great with ladies. I didn't
tell them it was a scam though.
