When will the FDA conform safety of nanotechnology in medical devices/food packaging?

In 2006, New scientist reported that the FDA did not have the financial resorces to test nanotechnology. The US Food and Drug Administration lacks the resources to assess their safety.

The report, which was by former FDA deputy commissioner Michael Taylor warns that the agency's $1.9 billion budget for 2007 is less than half what it needs to regulate conventional foods, drugs and medical devices, let alone nanotech.

The FDA cannot acquire the expertise in this field, so it may not spot problems, or may discover them too late. For instance, researchers are pushing for carbon nanotubes in medical treatments, but whether they affect DNA is yet to be conformed.

That was in October, 2006....

Does anyone know of any further developments?
