A Note On "Dollhouse"...

Posted 02-13-2009 at 08:07 PM by Mercedes Benzene (A Peregrination of Life in Notes)
Did anyone else watch the premier of "Dollhouse" on FOX this evening?
It's Joss Whedon's new creation. JW, as many of you know, is my favorite writer/director/producer. He's the genius behind "Buffy," "Angel," "Dr. Horrible," "Firefly," etc.

This premier was... intriguing to say the least. It will be interesting to see how this series progresses.

Cheers for now.

A Note on Tried and True Chemical Procedures....

Posted 02-12-2009 at 05:59 PM by Mercedes Benzene (A Peregrination of Life in Notes)
So, for the fast few months I've been trying to find a way of producing 4-bromoresorcinol with good yield.
Well after trying a whole bunch of modern procedures, I stumbled upon this one on Tuesday.
http://www.orgsyn.org/orgsyn/pdfs/CV2P0100.pdf

It's from 1937, but I used it, and today I ended up with a very sizable amount of product. It felt so good.

It just goes to show that the old and obscure can often be the most appropriate.

A Note on Kindle 2.0 Speculations....

Good day everyone. If you haven't already heard, Amazon is set to officially release to the public its Kindle 2 tomorrow, Monday February 9th.

I never did buy the current version, as I was hoping for an upgrade. As of this moment there are "leaked" pictures of the new Kindle, as well as speculative pricing.
On those two fronts respectively:
  • I kinda like the new design. It's definitely an improvement over 1.0, but I was really hoping for a touch screen.
  • Word

A Note on Successful Bromination....

The reaction I set up yesterday was very successful. It went according to plan, and at my best estimates, I have approximately 95% pure 4-bromoresorcinol.
Tomorrow, I'll recrystallize the crude product that I have and get an idea of % yield. My hope is that it is at least 80%.

Anyway, here are some TLC plates from today's analysis:

A Note On This Semester's Classes...

Posted 01-27-2009 at 07:17 PM by Mercedes Benzene (A Peregrination of Life in Notes)
A list of classes I'm taking this semester:

Honors General Chemistry 2 for chemistry majors.
Chemistry lab
German 2
Calculus 2
History of Western Science and Technology
Archaeology and Prehistory
Research (not actually the name of a class... but you know...)

Also, as a follow-up to my previous entry, I'm currently attempting to synthesize 4-bromoresorcinol with good yield. We'll see over the next couple days if it works. Fingers...
