after reading many methods for reusing silica gel packs used as desiccants for my camera equipment, i settled on nuken' 'em in the microwave bath. 
i put 5 or 6 on a glass plate and zapped them 3 times on high for ~20 seconds per burst and allowing them to cool for several minutes between.. too much at once apparently causes meltdown! 
all's well that ends dry.
