Yesterday I just saw this movie and in my view it is a must to all those who like good SF (= not like independence day).
It is very meditative and makes you think about it for a while. It is directed by Luc Besson and is with Jean Reno.

It is situated in a post-apocalyptic world and the fight for survival the people lost the ability to speak; this makes the movie even more meditative since there are no words (there is plenty of sound, though). I don't want to say more about the story, but it is one of those movies which are just great, which makes you think on the nature of mankind...

I think I remember it, but it must be at least 20 years old. Is it available on DVD now, or has it been brought into circulation again ?

Yes it is from 1983...24 years and it is available on DVD (although I read somewhere that it is hard to find) but over here there are videotheques which have it on dvd.
