There are about 20
protein amino acids (including hydroxyproline that is modfied post-transcription). All
protein amino acids are L-alpha-amino acids (except for glycine, of course, that is achiral). A D-alpha-amino acid would not be a
protein amino acid (except for some fungal toxins). An amino acid without its amino group alpha to its carboxyl would not be a
protein amino acid, and there are an unlimited number of those.
