need to be able to 'hang out' in here

Like what i pictured (and please forgive my seeming ungratefullness and ignorance at not knowing what's involved) is instead of a place where you can start a thread, have just a place where everyone's name that is in this chess room to be on the wall or something so you can see and then when someone else joins you know they're looking for a game of chess. You then IM them or something and play the game through (say) pm's or im's or hotmail or whatever. Sorry, but i dont enjoy playing if it's like make 2 posts now and then 1 tomorrow 3 the next day and whatever, so i wont be playing. No ultimatum intended, just dont enjoy it

For example, what i would do is open this room up in a tab or window or something whilst i was online and then i can just sit here all the while whilst online reguarly popping back and forth to see who's in in the hope of having a game, but hey that's just me

I have an idea to suggest: you could open up a thread asking to play someone. When they answer the call change the thread title to <Name> vs <Name>, Then if someone has any image software which can edit layers, make a crude replica of a chess board with different pieces and edit the image based upon user movement. Moves can be posted within the thread. Time consuming but one way to look at it.

One of the canonical ways to do this, commonly used in email games, is to forward the entire move list, in full algebraic, that is with from and to squares listed. So instead of
1. e4 you say 1. e2-e4. The point of this is if a mistake is made, a position can easily be backed up. It is accompanied by a current diagram, usually called an "Ugly ASCII Diagram" or "UAD" on chessvariants.org. However, for the board to look right a monospaced font must be available, and it appears this forum has none.

umm, or we can actually setup a chess server and have this thread just be a discussion of heated and interesting games....

I guess we can get some sort of web-based chat board up and running...I just don't like the idea of everyone hanging out in a chat room when we have a forum to run...

Hey, chess would just be the icing on the cake here at Hypography. I mean who would think to themselves "I want to play chess, hey maybe I should go to Hypography!". They would probably just go to some simple site like chess.com or something. I just wanted this forum because I wanted to see how I would fare against such an elitist army of intellectuals such as you. But I'm kinda in the same boat as geko. It's just not as fun, but since this was my idea I should keep my mouth shut 'till I do the programming involved in starting something like a multi-player chess forum. Oh well...

rotf...
That was funny. You have no idea that I almost got banned here using a term very similar to that... I think I may have said "pseudo-intellectuals" though
Thanks for reminding me of that, DM. It brought back a good chuckle...

this is actually what i thought

sure i could go to chess.com buy a game or whatever but the reason i liked the idea of it here is that it's a kind of warm social place (to me anyway, i think i still see that place as like it was when i first came - i new every name i seen. BUt damn has it grown), and i was looking forward to playing some of the people ive met on here.

lol - damn that sounds like im lonely... ... sob sob, it's true, i have no one that wants to play chess with me anymore
