You should check out the "Algebraic Notation" thread at the top of this chess forum. It's not a long post and tells you all you need to know.

You still haven't read the thread on algebraic notation, have you? The move 6. ... g6 advances your king's knight pawn on g7 one square forward. Are you sure that's what you want to do?

no i have read it but tell me if i am wrong but are there not 8 squares

so i am actually moving the pawn that was in fromt of my horse on my king side foward one square
