While I'm not the greatest player out there, I've been playing since I was about 8 or 9. An uncle taught me, and I've kind of fumbled around in the dark since then.

As BD said the first part of the game is played with a set of moves that allows the more movable pieces a chance to get out and into the game sort of speak. I'm certain that you move your pawns in order to allow your bishops some freedom, and room to guard your king with a rook, or two depending on your style of play.

I've played the computer, I've played complete strangers and I've played one of my best friends for a number of years. Each game has taught me different things.

One that you should be planning your own game out 3-5 moves in advance, more if you're so inclined. I've found that I'm more of a reactionary player, and while defensively I'm rather strong, creating a play to mate someone is very difficult. I've played one fellow well over 40 or so games, and lost every one.

While I consider this to be a bee in my bonnet, he says it's rather challenging, because he can never foresee just what move I will make.

Through him I've learned that sometimes setting out a key piece as bait, is a good way to set things in motion. When first playing, I was hesitant to lose my queen and relied far too much on her. Now however, I find that I am usually able to capture a queen myself if I'm willing to put my own on the line.

If you'd like a few games, I'd love the opportunity to play. Doesn't really matter if you're "boring" or not, as it isn't the excitement value I'm looking for when I play chess. I'm looking for an opponent who like myself is in a continual state of learning, and who just enjoys the game for what it is.

If you'd like to play, please just start in and see who jumps at the opportunity! We'd love it if some new members would help revive this somewhat moribund forum!

Cheers,
Buffy

Re: Chess skill

Apply your time, energy and skill to poker instead. Your opponents will most certainly not say you are boring and the challenge is just as great and potentialy more rewarding.

Chess is clearly suffering from the problem that nobody plays it anymore.

Poker doesn't seem to have that problem.
