Ticket prices are really high here, too. I give myself a break by riding my bike to a lower fare zone and getting on/off the train there. I literally can't afford not to exercise!

Re: Do You Commute??

I drive to work myself, an hour each way, sometimes 90 mins each way. I do this because there are no better options. I don't want to carpool, it's too inflexible for me. I don't like taking the train because it takes just as long (sometimes longer) and half the time I end up standing for that whole time, noooo thanks! I usually like to get to work by 6:30 and leave by 3:00, then I'm home by 4:00 so I can spend more time with my kids since they are in bed by 8:00. When I take the train, I have to go by its schedule and the earliest I can get home is about 5:30, then we eat dinner and at 7:00 the kids are getting ready for bed.

And no, I don't drive a Toyota PIOUS, so I'm not helping the environment that way either. I wish there was a train that would get me to work at 6:30 and leave for home at 3:00 and offer me a guarenteed seat, if there was, I would take it, but unfortunately there isn't one.

I am just curious a) where you commute b) how many other train users find they have to stand. (For me it fewer than 5% of journeys.)

I commute from Stafford VA to DC. Somtimes I can sit, but on other days it seems like a good 35% of people are standing and the isles of the train are packed, it's a pain in the neck to try to get off at your stop. I have bad knees and its horrible to stand for an hour in something that is moving and rocking back and forth, but I'm not going to sit down while some older woman is standing.
