What is education?

We all have had above average education of diiferent kind at different schools/colleges/institutes. Many of us may be concerned about the education of a youngster relative. So what in your opinion is education?

Re: What is education?

Education is many things, it depends on the setting. You need to differenticate between settings like classroom teaching, lectures, public outreach, home studies, kindergarten, web courses...

There's also education under a propaganda regime (like, nationalistic tendencies in many countries, and history revisionism, and removal of oppsing views - read China).

I'd also argue that education is very much a matter of what the student perceives it as. If a student is not prepared to learn, not much can be done.

I have no clear definition for education. All your options would be correct in any given setting.

Re: What is education?

I would state that the definition of Education is as follows:

1. The act or process of educating or being educated.
2. The knowledge or skill obtained or developed by a learning process.
3. A program of instruction at a specified kind or level eg. Driving.
4. The field of study that is concerned with the pedagogy of teaching and learning.

Also, Option Three would be the second most favourable had I to pick another.
The development of people for society is why education would be very important in Ireland, I'm sure this is the same in other countries, as no formal education leads to underdeveloped economy and society.

A Pre-Requisite for Employment is too specific to 2nd Level School, however, you could also learn to drive or do a home-study course that unaffects your current employment situation. And transfer from teacher to taught isn't too specific because you will always have a teacher with you learning any skill, I think. But even so, it's too specific in terms of the broad definition of Education.

Re: What is education?

I said other, not sure if I could put it into words, but its none of the other options for me. I think its growth, personal or interlectual or maybe even far more basic growth of an individual.

Re: What is education?

all of the above, and other.

i believe that education is the ability to communicate, think, and survive effectively.
education is the ability to recognize, and productively assert, honesty/understanding.

Re: What is education?

I said "all of the above" because education is really a complex mix of things tha tis not fully described by the options given in the poll.
I have a hard time explaining it myself, but it probably comes closest to the first option mentioned in the poll: "transfer of information".

'Education of the masses about AIDS' -No employment and all that involved.
Hence, I disagree with option 2.

I cannot visualise education without a teacher. It becomes more like simple 'learning'.

And, I think that if 'education' does not have a positive implication for society, then it is something else.
