latex code question

Just a quick question: what do I have to do so that the formulas are not enumerated through all sections like (1),(2), etc.

But in the first section like (1.1),(1.2),etc and in the second like (2.1),(2.2),etc.

Also is this possible in the article class? Or do i have to choose the report or even the book class?

check this out, just look throught the file and run it through latex, the numbering scheme should be quite satisfying

if not then we may have to dig deeper

Thanks very much, I figured it out after comparing the documents code with my code, you have to type before the \begin{document}:
\numberwithin{equation}{section}

and I guess if you replace section with subsection you get even the 1.1.2 for example.
You are right this document teaches a lot! Did i àunderstand right that you can make your own comands , for example if I want to shorten the \left( to \( I do it just do it by typing: \def\({\left(}

yes sanctus very much so, you can most certainly make your own commands... they are more like xml or css definitions, but yes, nontheless your own personal commands
