Don't worry, we try to help out when we can.
Its likely that you've got driver problems. Most USB devices do seem to need them, even with XP and Vista, although I've had good luck with plain old thumb drives. M$ would recommend reinstalling your OS, but that's always pretty drastic, I would certainly check your USB and hard drive device drivers, and also check your BIOS USB port settings (may work better if its set to 2.0 only).
Also be sure that you use the USB device removal routine when taking it out. Machines can get very cranky if you just yank the thing out without warning (and with a drive, you'll easily lose data).
