My indoor planting of New Moon Peas have sprouted already. I put a section of chicken wire flat over my outdoor plantings to keep the cat and/or squirrels out until I get some sproutlings. I have an idea to staple some wood poles to each side of the wire section & then "dome it up" over the planted bed. This will keep out the varmits and I can put some clear plastic over-top if I need to & have a make-shift greenhouse.

I really got my heart on for my veggie garden this year.

The Equinox is nigh
got some clouds up in the sky
plant some seeds and give a sigh
do your best that they don't die.

My rough guestimate is that I have ~150 ft^2 under cultivation. I did put the plastic over the chicken wire and with the unruly weather it's prolly a good thing. I put my Peas in the ground yesterday because they had long roots growing out of the peat-pots I started them in; 1/2 an hour later I was finishing up a make-shift cover just as the hail arrived. No worries!! They seem well enough & the hail & snow squalls continue. Here's an overview of the main plot today:

Here's what I'm growing this year so far:
► Spinach
► Beet
► Cilantro
► Acorn Squash
► Pumpkin
► Sunflower
► Heirloom Tomato
► Heirloom Cantalope
► Green Beans
► Zucchini
► Cherry Tomato
► Red Radish
► Decorative Gourds
► Cucumber
► Pea
► Green Onion
► Leek
► Romaine Lettuce
► Jalepeno Pepper
► Wheat
► Garlic
???

Turtle, You planted seeds already??

The weather has been Crazy around here. Plus its a little too early.

Oh well..

I hope you can keep up your enthusiasm and momentum all year. I'm not starting until April. I have some prep work to do yet.

Oh yeah baby! I'm on it like stink on a Sasquatch. Tomatoes up indoors, as is some cantalope, & squash sproutlings, and those peas started inside of course. Tomorrow I plant again outside, on the Full Moon.

Plant thee when
the Moon is Full,
for bountie's harvest,
filling your bowl.

Re: What's Growing In Your Garden? Horticultural Science

The crocuses are up, so thats a sure sign of spring around the corner soon.
Trees are starting to bud.

Ahhh! another planting season.

I love horticulture!

The Christmas Icestorm we had destroyed a few things in the yard, including a large Juniper. Theres plenty of prep work to be done, and yard debris to get rid of for now.
I'm not sure what I want to grow this year yet..

I'm excited for my strawberry patch though. I have a nice one established but still young. The War on Slugs will begin soon.

Did you know that copper sheeting can protect plants from slugs?
I just learned this. Apparently, slugs and snails cannot cross anything made of copper. It kills them.

A Note On: Interesting Pulmonata chemical intereactions.

The early bird gets the worm and the Worm Moon gets the early Bird. Today is that Worm Moon and I am that Bird.
Full Moon Names and Their Meanings :: Farmers' Almanac
Quote:
• Full Worm - March Moon As the temperature begins to warm and the ground begins to thaw, earthworm casts appear, heralding the return of the robins. The more northern tribes knew this Moon as the Full Crow Moon, when the cawing of crows signaled the end of winter; or the Full Crust Moon, because the snow cover becomes crusted from thawing by day and freezing at night. The Full Sap Moon, marking the time of tapping maple trees, is another variation. To the settlers, it was also known as the Lenten Moon, and was considered to be the last full Moon of winter.
Today I planted a round of Sunflowers outside and transplanted a couple tomato sprouts to wider deeper pots inside. Tomatos readily grow roots from their stems when they get covered in soil, so at each replanting I set the sproutlets deeper and cover the stem to develop a robust root system.

My Red Radishes that I planted outside 2 weeks ago on the New Moon are up today and the Peas are hard at work & in fine fiddle. Racoon is right to question me on one point, and that is whether I can keep up the enthusiasm. We will see what we will see.

seedlings starting indoors. cherry & heirloom tomatoes, zucchini, acorn squash, gourd, cantelope, jalepeno pepper, & cucumber.

seedlings, radish. 4 weeks after outdoor planting under poly-tunnel

seedlings, gourd. with the bottom cut out and flaps cut & folded on each side, a plastic mikjug makes an excellent mini-greenhouse for early plants.(the jug is hanging on a stick in the photo: off the plant for the day.)

Re: What's Growing In Your Garden? Horticultural Science

I pity you all that live in colder climates. I have just finished planting my transplants of tomatoes and peppers, and I am enjoying my first harvest of sugar snap peas. Green beans are sprouting, and curcubits and corn will be planted in a few weeks.

The down side, of course, is that I only have a few months left of lettuce, and a few weeks left for spinach. Shade cloth only goes so far...
