so i was strolling along the top of some rocks on the beach the other day (santa cruz, CA), and some very strange designs in the rock faces caught my eye.

they were brownish-light brown, tribal-like natural patterns in the sides of the rocks.
how would water/erosion form these strange grainlike patterns?

are these similar to the rings in trees? some kind of measureable effect which grows with time?

i'd appreciate any insight

ah i remember that. natural art, it was very warm colored and ancient. vibrant of course.

It's exactly like the rings in trees. I'd say it's just from crazy tidal patterns. Normally when you dig into the earth, the lines are very straight.... but if you're seeing tribal looking patterns, it's probably from the coast line...

yeah those were very strange, i should go back and get some pictures, and post them, and see what some experienced geologist types have to say about it.

That's "lurking" around; not lying around.
Anywho, I haven't visited those particular rocks. Nevertheless, the outward appearence of rocks is the result of many factors of their specific environs over time. In general a rock doesn't look today exactly as it did yesterday or tomorrow; moreover the time of day & weather conditions affect the outward appearence as well.
____Do by all means post a photo if you can. I love looking at rocks.

well it sounds like i need to take another trip out to them to think about this a bit more in depth.

and of coure get pictures for further analysis
