Whereas we would just shoot it with a rifle, or kill it with multiple spear thrusts. That way we don't have to leap up a tree every time we see the same tiger.

The reason for that has not been decided. It does afford us a more efficient cooling mechanism through sweating. It may be because we adopted a semi-acquatic lifestyle for a time. (A controversial theory, but one with some interesting consequences. Google

We all use all of our brains. Someone has told you the old chestnut about using only 10%. That is nonsense.
We have a pretty good balance system, inherited from our tree climbing ancestors. Is your brain so large it causes you to fall down a lot?
