Looking at the site reminded me of a book I read written by Jethro Kloss in the late 1930s. He wrote that basically a bad diet is the cause of cancer because the body has been poisoned. The treatment is then to cleanse the body with a nutritional diet. He recommended a diet of fruit, vegetables, herbs, plenty of exercise, frequent sweat baths and massage to eliminate the poisons from the system. Kloss cites success in treating people with cancer using this method, and I've always found it interesting to read.

Re: Cancer Cures

Talking of poisons, not exactly a cure, but something to avoid.
Fishing in Sydney Harbour has been banned because of the Agent Orange dumped by Dow Corp. there during the Vietnam War. Local fishermen and their families are full of the stuff. The NSW health Department is telling them "Not to worry-she'l be right mate"

Agent Orange Chemical, Dioxin, Attacks The Mitochondria To Cause Cancer, Study Shows

ScienceDaily (Dec. 21, 2007) — Researchers with the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine have demonstrated the process by which the cancer-causing chemical dioxin attacks the cellular machinery, disrupts normal cellular function and ultimately promotes tumor progression.
The team identified for the first time that mitochondria, the cellular sub-units that convert oxygen and nutrients into cellular fuel, are the target of tetrachlorodibenzodioxin, or TCDD.
The study showed that TCDD induces mitochondria-to-nucleus stress signaling, which in turn induces the expression of cell nucleus genes associated with tumor promotion and metastasis.

The mechanism the research team has described is directly relevant to understanding incidences of breast and other cancers in human populations exposed to these chemicals.

That's just until they discover that one of their loved ones has been affected. Then something will be done!

Comfrey

The herb Russian Comfrey (Symphytum spp?) has had some success with some tumours; especially those of the face. (Basically any tumour where you can attach/ touch with a poltice of the root or leaves)
Poultices of the root are used
It seems to be a 'granulating'' (?) herb encouraging new healthy tissue to grow.

I know many people who have cured chronic leg ulcers with it.The herb is put on the good tissue and the wound gradually heals inward. Ointments are less messy although poultices of the root are probably more effective. It seems to encourage 'healing".

Now here's something to drink about...

Cancer-fighting agent found in beer

Quote:
A key ingredient of beer may contain a cancer-fighting substance, a German study indicated.

Studies indicated xanthohumol, found in hops, inhibits a family of enzymes that can trigger the cancer process, as well as help the body detoxify carcinogens, science newswire Ivanhoe reported Monday. Preliminary studies at Oregon State University show that xanthohumol can kill breast, colon, ovarian and prostate cancers.

"It's very healthy. I think the ingredients in the beer are very good," Werner Back of Brewing Technology at the Technical University of Munich.

Xanthohumol contains more powerful antioxidants than vitamin E and some studies indicate it helps reduce oxidation of bad cholesterol, the newswire reported.

"Xanthohumol has been shown to be a very active substance against cancer," said Markus Herrmann , also in Munich. "It comes in small sticky beads, which you find within the hops."

But don't frost that mug just yet. It would take 60 regular beers to equal the amount of xanthohumol German researchers are able to brew in their one super beer.

Guided imagery helps in healing

ROCHESTER, Minn., Jan. 3 Guided imagery -- an imagination technique that can be taught -- can help people heal, a U.S. health newsletter reports.

The Mayo Clinic Health Letter says guided imagery is more than listening to relaxing sounds but a learning process in which listening, relaxing and imagining send a message to the emotional area of the brain. The body responds in a number of ways, including lowered heart and breathing rates, the newsletter says.

Some of the benefits of guided imagery are:

-- Reducing the side effects from cancer treatment.

-- Reducing fear and anxiety prior to surgery.

The New Anticancer Weapon: Fetal Cells
Cellular stowaways may be able see through cancer cells' disguises.
by Dr. Robert W. Lash

Having a child changes a woman's life in the biggest ways possible.
It also seems to have the potential to change the mother in a tiny but very important way.
When a woman is pregnant, cells from the developing fetus often enter the mother's bloodstream, and some of them even set up long-term residence.
A recent study from the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center at the University of Washington suggests that these fetal cells may be more than just quiet passengers—they may also protect the mother from breast cancer.

For many years, it's been known that the risk of breast cancer is lower in women who have had children than in those who have not.
There have been many theories about why this is the case, most of which focus on the word hormones and are accompanied by a lot of hand waving.

We also know that patients who receive bone marrow transplants from less compatible donors have a lower risk of developing new cancers.
The leading theory for this observation is that the foreign bone marrow cells can more easily recognize and attack cancer cells in their new host's body.

Putting these two sets of observations together, Vijayakrishna Gadi and Lee Nelson hypothesized that the persistence of fetal cells in the maternal circulation might protect mothers from breast cancer in a manner similar to the protection afforded by a bone marrow transplant. . . . . . ,.

Herb Triggers Cancer Cell Death

chinese herb, huang qin, cell death, leukemia, cancer remedyA substance found in the popular Chinese herb huang qin triggers the death of tumor cells, while having virtually no effect on healthy cells.

Many researchers have looked to the capability of controlled cell suicide as a means of fighting cancer. But it is a risky approach, because it involves the danger of damaging healthy tissue, too. Scientists have been searching for substances that induce cell death selectively in tumor cells.

Now scientists of the German Cancer Research Centre have discovered that wogonin, a component of huang qin, causes apoptosis (cellular suicide) in cultured leukemia cells without affecting healthy blood cells. Wogonin has already been shown to reduce cancer growth in mice.

Herbal/Hormonal dietary supplement possibly associated with prostate cancer progression.

Herbal/Hormonal dietary supplement possibly associated with prostate cancer progression.

Clin Cancer Res. 2008 Jan 15;14(2):607-11

Authors: Shariat SF, Lamb DJ, Iyengar RG, Roehrborn CG, Slawin KM

Background: Patients seek herbal/hormonal dietary supplements (HHDS) to prevent and/or solve health and aging issues. After two men developed an unusual course of clinically aggressive prostate cancer within months of starting daily consumption of the same HHDS product, we investigated the effect of this product on prostate cancer progression. Methods: We evaluated serum levels of total testosterone, luteinizing hormone, and follicle-stimulating hormone and screened prostate biopsy and metastatic specimens for androgen receptor protein expression and mutations. We did hormone analyses and capillary electrophoresis. We tested the effect of the HHDS product on androgen receptor-negative (DU-145 and PC-3) and androgen receptor-positive (LNCaP) human prostate cancer cell lines. RESULTS: Both patients had low hormone levels. The androgen receptor was expressed in all primary and metastatic prostate cancer tissues and no mutations were identified. Hormone analysis revealed that the HHDS contained testosterone and estradiol.
The HHDS product was a more potent dose-dependent stimulator of cancer cell growth than testosterone both in androgen receptor-negative and receptor-positive cell lines. Blocking experiments with increasing concentrations of bicalutamide did not prevent the HHDS product-stimulated growth. We filed an adverse event report with the Food and Drug Administration who issued a warning letter.
The manufacturer responded by removing this HHDS product from the market.
CONCLUSIONS: The HHDS product contained one or more endocrinologically active tumor-promoting components that had cellular androgen receptor status-independent activity. The HHDS product exhibited potent prostate cancer growth stimulatory activity that was more powerful than that of testosterone, independent of the androgen-receptor status of prostate cancer cells, and resistant to antiandrogen blockade.

Resveratrol Imparts Photoprotection of Normal Cells and Enhances the Efficacy of Radiation Therapy in Cancer Cells.

Photochem Photobiol. 2008 Jan 23;
Authors: Reagan-Shaw S, Mukhtar H, Ahmad N

Solar radiation spans a whole range of electromagnetic spectrum including UV radiation, which are potentially harmful to normal cells as well as ionizing radiations which are therapeutically beneficial towards the killing of cancer cells. UV radiation is an established cause of a majority of skin cancers as well as precancerous conditions such as actinic keratosis. However, despite efforts to educate people about the use of sunscreens and protective clothing as preventive strategies, the incidence of skin cancer and other skin-related disorders are on the rise. This has generated an enormous interest towards finding alternative approaches for management of UV-mediated damages. Chemoprevention via nontoxic agents, especially botanical antioxidants, is one such approach that is being considered as a plausible strategy for prevention of photodamages including photocarcinogenesis. In this review, we have discussed the photoprotective effects of resveratrol, an antioxidant found in grapes and red wine, against UVB exposure-mediated damages in vitro and in vivo. In addition, we have also discussed studies showing that resveratrol can act as a sensitizer to enhance the therapeutic effects of ionizing radiation against cancer cells. Based on available literature, we suggest that resveratrol may be useful for (1) prevention of UVB-mediated damages including skin cancer and (2) enhancing the response of radiation therapies against hyperproliferative, precancerous and neoplastic conditions.

Lobeline, a piperidine alkaloid from Lobelia can reverse P-gp dependent multidrug resistance in tumor cells.

Phytomedicine. 2008 Jan 25;

Authors: Ma Y, Wink M

Multidrug resistance (MDR) can limit efficacy of chemotherapy. The best studied mechanism involves P-gp (P-glycoprotein) mediated drug efflux.
This study focuses on MDR reversal agents from medicinal plants, which can interfere with P-gp. Rhodamine 123 accumulation assay and flow cytometry analysis were employed to screen for P-gp dependant efflux inhibitors. Lobeline, a piperidine alkaloid from Lobelia inflata and several other Lobelia species, inhibited P-gp activity.
MDR reversal potential of lobeline could be demonstrated in cells treated with doxorubicin in that lobeline can sensitize resistant tumor cells at non-toxic concentrations.
However, lobeline cannot block BCRP (Breast Cancer Resistance Protein) dependent mitoxantrone efflux. Lobeline could be a good candidate for the development of new MDR reversal agents.

Authors: Seely D, Kennedy DA, Myers SP, Cheras PA, Lin D, Li R, Cattley T, Brent PA, Mills E, Leonard BJ
CONCLUSION:
In vitro analysis of Essiac indicates significant antioxidant and immunomodulatory properties, as well as neoplastic cell specific cytotoxicity consistent with the historical properties ascribed to this compound.

Importantly, significant CYP450 and fibrinolysis inhibition were also observed.

This is the first comprehensive investigation of the in vitro effects of Essiac.

Essiac's original formula is believed to have its roots in native Canadian Ojibway medicine. Essiac, given its name by Rene Caisse ("caisse" spelt backwards), consists of four main herbs that grow in the wilderness of Ontario, Canada
.

The four main herbs in Essiac are:
  • Burdock (Arctium lappa):
  • Indian rhubarb
  • Sorrel:
  • Slippery elm:
