Exclamation Is this healthy or normal?!?!

So I sat the other day behind my desk and in a whim decided to check my pulse. Boredom does strange things to a person.

Any case - I was sitting behind my desk between designs, and my heartbeat turns out to be 48 per minute. I've heard that round about 70-80 is the norm. Keep in mind, I'm as unfit as all hell, a tad heavier than I should be, and a regular smoker. Also, I do partake in the occasional lager or ten.

So - can this be indicative of some heart-related problem? I don't think such a low heartbeat is normal?

Re: Is this healthy or normal?!?!

I see and I think this is not normal. You should go to a doctor office to check your heart and take an EKG from you, then he/she can decide about that.

Another thing is that your smoking and your stress can be its cuase.

I hope you are OK.

Re: Is this healthy or normal?!?!

You may have counted wrong, if your pulse was weak you could have skipped some beats. Also you where just sitting there so you would expect it to be low, just not that low..

Re: Is this healthy or normal?!?!

not a doctor here but i learned in physiology that you need to exercise to get your metabolism up which will increase your blood flow which will increase cardiac output which will increase heart beat/rate.

But your beat is not good and you should have your BP check as well or best see a doctor like others have suggested.

(i am very surprised to see you post your question here than to see a doctor. This shows that you have faith in this community )

Re: Is this healthy or normal?!?!

I don't know about SA, but in grocery stores and pharmacies here they have machines that will read your pulse and blood pressure for free. I would do a few trials with one of those before dishing out for a doc. As Jay implied, checking the pulse with your fingers and a watch is not accurate enough.

Re: Is this healthy or normal?!?!

Don't think I missed a beat, pulse was strong enough. Besides, a regular thump...thump...thump should sound like thump...thump... ... ...thump when a beat was missed. Mine was pretty regular. I think I should go and see a quack of some sort, flavour or description.

Re: Is this healthy or normal?!?!

Dude... don't even worry about it. You're already dead. Your "pulse" is actually a remnant of spacetime fluctation, and you're actually a god... so, worry not.

Go skydiving and take your pulse then. If it's still in the 40's, you've simply forgotten how to count.
