Atropine has been used safely in moderate doses (like this- 0.4mg) for decades. It will dry your mouth. It is a general anticholinergic (i.e., it blocks acetylcholine) in peripheral systems, so it will suppress any parasympathetic activity. It will:
- Dry secretions, including your mouth
- elevate heart rate
- dilate your pupils
- Speed up your gut activity
- Inhibit some intentional muscular activity, most notably the muscles used in urination
If the effects are too strong, it might make sense to try some milder antihistamine (which are usually also anticholinergic) like chlorpheniramine (usually sold as the maleate salt, in 4 mg tablets). It may make you drowsy, but may have a milder action.
