very long story short there is a chemical called "P" (seriously it is "Substance P" -unimaginative chemists).
No 'P'=No pain.
Capsiacin gradually diminishes the level of "P" so no pain.
It works like this; you have a sore knee you rub on some chilli, it burns a bit, pain is a bit less. You keep doing this for a few days until your body gets fed up and stops producing 'P'.
QED= no pain

If you find this hard to believe look to the all-knowing web:-

You can make you own liniment by blending some chilli in alcohol or oil and letting it infuse for a few days. There are four varieties of Capsiacins in chillies Different chillies have different combinations and pemitations of them.
You may need to increase the strength of your lineament over time I don't know for sure.
You can also buy Capsaicin cream (same as in pepper "capsicum" (sic)sprays). "Zostrix" is a brand used out here. It only contains one variety of Capsiacin
Warning Quirky Fact Alert.
Capsiacin is made by the Tabasco factory who also make it also for pepper spray.
Unfortunately most older arthritic people don't use it because the heat sensation frightens them. Capsiacin is totally safe even used in very high doses (eg pepper sprays -if you are not asthmatic or have a weak heart!).
Warning Quirky Fact Alert.
All police in NSW Oz are sprayed with "Capsicum (sic) Spray" as part of their training . I met a senior Sargent who went though the training.

She said she would
never use it on anyone as it was too cruel -she was a very serious, no-nonsense, tough cop.

In the training though, they used water to wash it off the police trainees.
This makes it much worse as Capsiacin is not soluble in water. You must have oil or alcohol.

I love spicy food. Wonder if it helps with depression. |
Yes it does.
I list dozens of medical conditions Chilli can be used for in the book

(remember the book?) including the fact that the chilli leaves are anti-biotic!
