Reporter: Samantha Donovan
MARK COLVIN: One of the greatest achievements in recent Australian medical research, the world's first cancer vaccine, cleared a significant hurdle today.
The Gardasil vaccine, designed to prevent cervical cancer, got approval for use in the United States.
The development of the vaccine began in the 1990s with Professor Ian Frazer's research at the University of Queensland.
It's expected that the Australian Therapeutic Goods Administration will approve Gardasil for local use in the next few weeks.
Samantha Donovan has the story.
SAMANTHA DONOVAN: Gardisil protects against the forms of the human papillomavirus, or HPV, that cause about 70 per cent of cervical cancer cases.
