Looks like this week you Down-underians are getting some meteor action we Up-abovians aren't.

I have an 200mm (8 inch) scope with 1200mm focal length - a good large but still portable size

The submillimeter emission is interesting, Im not sure of its exact nature but it could be a secondary reaction between some material spewed away from the black hole. The models we have for these situations are still pretty basic and dont even explain fully what is going on in our galaxy yet. So there is still a few more breakthroughs to be made yet.

I just read up a bit at Wiki on the Sombrero galaxy; maybe you can discover the source of its submillimeter emmissions. How big is your scope?
Rains have set in here for a few days, so I'm on hold for skywatching.

Bummer - it was a particularly sparse shower this year, I didnt see a thing either. I managed to do a bit of a galaxy hunt earlier this week and got Centaurus A, sombrero and The southern pinwheel
