They were "pretending to play"? No, I'm pretty sure they were really playing—we just heard the performance they did a couple days prior. It's understandable, I think. I can hardly use my keyboard when the thermostat gets turned down. I can't imagine playing a violin or a piano outside in DC in the winter.

It was a pre-recorded performance and they were merely going through the motions to the recording at the inauguration....Twas on the news....the reason being they were afraid they wouldn't be able to keep their instruments in tune....as a cellist (and player of a great many other stringed instruments) I can say both I understand and 'tis a pretty lame reason...Ain't no warmer here and not only have I given performances outside in our lovely winter weather our daughter has as well for band.
