This is due to two things: 1. our newsletter software is broken, and 2. we have had too much else to do to install a new one. Therefore I am sending you this little greeting to remind you of Hypography! If it's been a while since you visited us, you will find pleny of new threads and posts. We are nearing 5,000 members, and soon Hypography turns 7 years. We don't have a huge celebration planned, but good ideas are always welcome. We also have monthly photo contests now! We had an "incident" this weekend where we had articles posted at both Digg.com, reddit.com and some other sites - resulting in us breaking the maximum online users at any one moment with a huge margin! It did also cause some downtime, so it was not all fun. But it's good to see that people find Hypography interesting. We've had a flurry of new members coming in, but few of them post. To all newcomers: Please make your first post in the introduction forum, and we'll make sure you feel welcome. We'll be announcing some cool stuff soon: A photography contest, and possibly an essay contest - as well as a barrage of quizzes. If you have ideas for contests, please let me know! Also, please help with trying out Killean's cool game, FlipMatch. All who try it out and leave their score and some feedback in this thread will participate in a raffle for two t-shirts. Dear $username - Finally I find time for another bulletin! It's been an incredibly busy week, with a final server move to make our old portal and forums reside on the same machine. This is the end of a project that has lasted for months, with only minor details left. If you haven't caught up yet, our forum portal page has changed and now includes a witty science cartoon by Jeff Swanson. Dear $username - 100K Milestone! It's astonishing how fast Hypography is picking up speed. A mere 16 months ago we had less than 10,000 posts - today we passed 100,000. A t-shirt will be drawn among those who participated in the "100,000 posts" thread and suggested at what time we would actually hit the mark. The member with the 100,000th post, however, was Turtle. Dear $username - I want to wish you a happy new year! The activity at the forums remained quite busy this Christmas, and the new year promises to be exiting for Hypography. If you haven't checked out the new arcade section, make sure you pay it a visit now. High scores are already being set and you better get your name on the lists before someone sets unbeatable high scores! About 15 games are available now, and more will be added continually. Science Forums Community Bulletin For unsubscription information, please see the bottom of this email --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Christmas letter from Tormod Dear $username - It has been a great year for Hypography! Our forums have grown almost tenfold from November 2004 until now. We have lots of new members, ant the site is getting very busy! From 2004 to 2005 we did a lot of work to separate our main portal and the forums, because we outgrew our hosting. Now we are working on putting them back together again with new hosting which should give us more possibilites for further services. At the same time, we are planning new and exiting content for you. We hope to start blogging soon - several users, some with very interesting views on controversial issues - have been invited to blog at Hypography. I hope to see this up and running by January. There will also be more regular content, like in the old days: More book reviews, more quizzes, more competitions - and of course daily news and updates like we have today. Among other things of interest, we are hosting a charity auction in the beginning of the new year, with fantastic prints by one of famous mathemagicians, Turtle, so make sure you don't spend all your money this Christmas. All the proceeds will go to charity, of course. I want to take this opportunity to thank you all for a wonderful 2005, and wish you a Merry Christmas (or Seasons Greetings - take your pick) on behalf of the entire Hypography staff. We will use the address hypography.com/forums as our main domain for the science forums. It shows famliarity with our portal at www.hypography.com, and also hopefully makes our site more acceptable by Google, who seems to hate us with their guts. It is a shame that Google has become a dictator of how webmasters must name their sites, but if we want to attract new members and visitors we need to be found. We therefor hope that our established domain, hypography.com, will help us out here. The scienceforums.com domain will remain, it will work, but it will immediately redirect you to the same page at the new domain. This has some implications: When we switch domain names, your login and password will not be remembered by the site. You will therefore need to re-login if you (like me) usually have the login set to "remember me". Note: If you forget your password, you need to have it reset. This is not hard to do, but please make sure to check that the e-mail you have used in your User CP is up-to-date. If not, make sure you change it! There is no reason to wait with this change so expect it to happen soon. So double-check that e-mail address. We will be unable to retrieve your passwords for you (since they are double encrypted), so you can save our team a lot of time by checking that your registered e-mail is correct. It is a project where 40 musicians from all over the world have teamed up to create a unique double CD. All the proceeds will be shared between the Red Cross and Habitat for Humanity. MEMBER PROFILE: ORBSYCLI This month, we decided to chat up our Lounge moderator Orbsycli ("Orb" among friends) - a guitar player like myself and of course a science buff. Orbsycli, can you tell us a little bit about yourself? i'm 17.....play guitar and compose music as well. that's pretty much my strong point. music, music theory, and the production of music. everything else is just stuff i'm curious about. (science-wise) hmmm...i love to learn and i'm on the computer pretty much all day since i moved here (california to florida). Tell us something about your education - where are you at, and where do you want go go from there? right now i'm slowly gaining credits toward my high school diploma through an alternative school. i could not take the normal high school here in bradenton, florida. though it was the richest school around, it made me sick. to be honest i have no idea where i want to go. all i want to do is make music and get paid for it. i may go to college for music production/recording arts...i may not. What are your goals in life? What would you like to work with? i just want to be happy, and use my creativity to my full potential. whether it's music, or faking a broadway scene in a park about two flies in love. How did you find Hypography? What made you sign up? i asked a friend of mine about eye anatomy, she googled it and found a thread on here. immediately i knew this place was great. "Science for everybody" not JUST really smart people...because that's something i'm not. What is your favorite thing about Hypography? the wide range of topics and fast responses from all sorts of people all around the world. ...and the least favorite? that there's nothing i can enthusiastically critisize about this place Why do you find science interesting? it explains the universe around us. it's knowledge, and exploration. two things i love. i just love to learn, and know the truth. Okay, if you could name a star after someone (not yourself). Who? And why? this is a strange question. to be quite honest this is just like naming a blade of grass. there are so many, and they are all relatively similar. but, to answer the question i would probably just name of after my best friend jian. we seem to talk about space a lot. You play guitar a lot. What do you play, and how much? i try to play just a little more complex, and a little more melodic every single day. seriously this is what i love, music.....making it, listening to it, experimenting with it. a brief tale was just something i improvised last night, i'm listening to it now and wondering what i was thinking....15 minutes of just acoustic? ahh oh well, at the time i thought it was pretty cool. but i wasn't really there if you know what i mean. And...when will you be posting your music at Hypography? ah. lately i've just been working alone in my room on my guitar. havn't recorded much lately, in fact nothing at all. i just rented out a storage place where my bands going to move into soon, write some material and hopefully get that recorded soon or something. rest assured whenever i have completed something i feel is decent, i'll let you guys know.
