Re: Cure Disease, save lives/ Or flush the toilet (Stem Cells)

I have to agree with Freethinker, so often with things like this and abortion, the real people who are affected are forgotten. It's a lot easier to say the group is more important than the individual when you've never met one of the individuals that you're planning on hurting. It's also a lot easier to say to support the group if you're not one of the individuals.

Re: Cure Disease, save lives/ Or flush the toilet (Stem Cells)

Well Stem cell research isnt banned in my country, which is the UK.

Its certainly not a waste investing in stem cell research. Think about all the people it can help. Im not personally ill but I know people that would benifit from this.

We see animals and organisms that have stem cells all over their body and once their leg or tail or body and even the head is cut off, They re-grow. this is because of stem cells.

So to say that we should abandon this research is a very bad mistake. It has amazing potential.

Here is proof that stem cells can work

Stem Cell Researcher Makes Paralyzed Rats Walk
http://www.techreview.com/articles/04/12/ap_3122004.asp?p=1

Trials are going to start in humans in 12 months.

But could you say to all them paralyzed and dying people that a few cells are more important than an already living conscious human being.

Care for the living, Cells are just cells, they do not feel pain, they dont care, they are human life, but its not a human being. Theres a difference.

Subjects: Genetics | Evolution | Physics & Cosmology | History | Ethics | Psychology & Neuroscience | Computing | Philosophy | Environment | Religion

Themes: The Relation of Science & Religion | Purpose & Design | Hope | Origins | Controversy | The Future | Global Perspectives | Faith | Aging | Health | Pain and Suffering

Questions: Does God Exist? | What Makes Us Human? | Are we Free? | Does God Act? | Where did we Come From? | Was the Universe Designed? | Did the Universe Have a Beginning? | Are We Alone?

Stem cell research is amazing and so worthwhile, why people take notice of this morality mumbo jumbo in this case beats me. if we managed to find a way of effectively manipulating stem cells, that would be a fine day in medical science and would save many lives, as well as perhaps finding a way to engineer organs for transplant instead of donors (not that donors is a bad idea, but ther is often a shortage or a mile long wait list.)

I think this will get the ball rolling so to speak. (no more road blocks)

Stem cells created without destroying embryos

A government official says the technique would make such research eligible for federal funding.
By Karen Kaplan, Los Angeles Times Staff Writer
January 11, 2008

Scientists reported Thursday that for the first time they have made human embryonic stem cells without destroying embryos, a development that the government's top stem cell official said would make the controversial research eligible for federal funding.

Story Landis, who chairs the National Institute of Health's stem cell task force, said that with certain safeguards, the new method appeared to comply with federal restrictions that have largely cut scientists off from the $28 billion the government spends on medical research each year.

Not gonna happen until the goverment can find a ways to tax it. . Kidding.

But seriously, today it's stem cell research and tomorrow we're dying of over population, starvation, thermal global nuclear meltdown, etc. If you ask me we need to find a way of trimming some fat

Get the wrong people off the bus, get the right people on and then figure out where we're gonna drive the bus.

God help us if GWB is the one making the decision of who the right people are that should get on the bus.

It seems to me that people tend to prefer to believe what they want to be real or true, despite evidence to the contrary.

When what you believe is refuted by evidence, you are faced with a choice.

Well yeah. I could hang with Jesus. It's those fascist neocon pricks. I'd just assume make my way on foot.
