From a Christian standpoint, is God good because He's God, or is goodness/evil above God?

what do you mean by goodness being above god?

well, if God is the highest authority, than no matter what he did, it should be "good", whatever he had deemed to be good. But if there is an idea of "good" apart from God, then that must mean that God answers to a higher authority.

Well, you can speak about this topics on this forums as long as you don't expect people to believe as well in god and proofs that are none. Actually you should talk about it, as it can be very interesting. Even if I don't believe in an existence of any god I still can follow a logic discussion starting from an illogic argument (i.e. the existence of god).

I guess he simply wanted to say that if there is a "referential system" not made by god which says what is good or bad, then god isn't above everything.

This just shows to me that the christian god is paradoxal from the start

You've stated a classic there pgrmdave. Is good what god deems? Or is god good?

Good/bad, right/wrong could be argued as being subjective anyway. Personally, I see many myricals being done because man is good, not because im told they're good by man (or god).

In Islamic theology, goodness is action that aids progression towards perfection and evil is action that goes the opposite way. The manifestations of God is deemed goodneess.

I suppose that, for a simple definition, God is the conscious, guiding force of the universe
