Drill holes in the pole of a magnet

What will happen to the magnetic field if tiny holes are made in the poles of a magnet?

The field will be slighty weaker.

Re: Drill holes in the pole of a magnet

Is there any danger that the temperature rise due to the drilling will influence the strength of the magnetic field ? I remember magnets stuck on the wall of an oven getting weaker.

Re: Drill holes in the pole of a magnet

theoretically yes, as you put more disorder in the system and hence the magnetics moments are less correlated with the consequence of diminishing the field strength...now if this is detectable I don't know.

Weaken and change shape slightly, I would say.

The field gets a bit weaker and won't be uniform in the vicinity of the hole. At other points of the surface the field will be the same, but the total flux will be decreased and therefore also the average flux density.

Certainly, and according to the magnetic material it can even be weaker after cooling down. If it reaches the material's Curie temperature, it loses magnetization completely.
