LQG vs String Theory

I just finished reading Lee Smolin's "Three roads Quantum Gravity", and it's a great book. I got my first taste of loop quantum gravity, and he compares it with string theory. He favours LQG over string theory, because it is background independent whereas string theory is background dependent. He says that LQG is deeper and more comprehensive.

Which theory are you for? and comment.

Re: LQG vs String Theory

Without the present ability to obtain experimental data to support either theory, I'm very suspect of any one of these theories becoming the so-called final theory. I do however lean a little toward Loop Quantum Gravity because I feel that String Theory is way to ambitious for trying to answer too many questions with just one theory. In any event, in the final analysis I don't think there will ever be a final theory, complete knowledge is an eternity outstretched.

Re: LQG vs String Theory

Some of the unifications that fall out of string theory seem too, for lack of a better word, neat to not mean something, imo. But I feel like their top down approach isn't likely to lead to results any time soon.

Re: LQG vs String Theory

Well, this is the only thread I could find mentioning Loop Quantum Gravity so instead of starting a new thread I'll just ask for clarification as to what it is here . So... What is LQG? And why is it more appealing than string theory?

I'll vote after getting some info .
