| Thinking | Re: The End of American Capitalism dmabus Re: The end of capitalism. Capitalism has never been ended, even in the Soviet Union, though it came close. Capitalism simply means the means-of-production are privately owned. Socialists often have advocated state ownership of certain large enterprises, for instance utilities, steel, banking etc. Socialists also advocate high taxation on remaining capitalist enterprises, wages and saleries for the purpose of redistribution. Socialist redistribution often includes indefinite and high unemployment compensation for workers. I have seen numbers mentioned as high as 80 percent of working wages. In Europe high taxation often takes the form of very high sales taxes, often refered to as Value Added Taxes. The ones I am familiar with seem to be in the 20-30 percent range. For instance, I bought a leather jacket while in Italy, and was entitled to recover the sales tax upon leaving the country. They never reimbursed me, of course, but in principle the taxes applied only to EU members, I believe. In addition, socialism generally includes state sponsored universal health care, education expenses and other benefits. The various Scandanavian countries are often cited as examples of Socialist economies. I think economists generally refer to most economically developed economies as mixed in nature. Quote:

Typing one of the common links reveals the post repeated elsewhere: http://nostradamus-usa.netfirms.com - Google Search The guy apparently has it out for prominent atheists and skeptics; a recurring theme is that he "converted Richard Dawkins into a Nostradamian" and some nonsense about PZ Myers and James Randi..
