Polyglots

The members of Hypography is a very diverse and interesting bunch. While reading through the posts, I have often wondered how many languages are represented here.

-What is your first language?
-How would you write "Science Forums" in your first language? (if not English, and if not mentioned already)
-What other language(s) do you speak?
-What language(s) would you like to learn?

Re: Polyglots

-My first language is Afrikaans. It is a Germanic language that developed from 17th century Dutch. It has been influenced mainly by English, but also by other languages in its early colonial contact, such as French, Portuguese and Malay. In addition, there is also some influence from other indigenous languages. South Africa currently has 11 (!) official languages, of which Afrikaans is one.

-"Science Forums" in Afrikaans would be "Wetenskapforums"

-I'm also fluent in Spanish (which is not one of the 11 official languages).

-My ancestors came to South Africa from Ireland, so I've always wanted to learn Irish Celtic. From a practical point of view, I would like to learn Zulu (one of the 11 official languages). And then I've always been fascinated by the ancient cultures of Central and South America, so I would love to learn a Mayan or Aztec language.

Re: Polyglots

My native tongue is the central Canadian dialect of english, eh? It's a tuque not a beanie, a roof not a ruff, and car not cahr.

I speak French relatively fluently, and I know snippets of Spanish and Japaneise.

I would really like to finish learning Japaneise, maby pick up Cantoneise too.

Re: Polyglots

First language is English

I speak pretty good Spanish, although I really could use a refresher course , and a key board that can type Spanish letters like ~N (enne)
and make ? and ! go upside down.

I seem to understand a bit of Italian and French thanks to Spanish.

Would like to learn German and some Chinese. (although Chinese is a lot like Italian in so much as there are so many dialects and variances within those respective countries.)

Finnish is an extremely difficult language to learn.

I would like to learn some Norwegian too, Because my Grandmother is Norwegian.
And I could say stuff to Tormod
