(CBS) There are few issues as hotly contested — and as poorly understood — as the question of what makes a person gay or straight. It's not only a political, social, and religious question but also a scientific question, one that might someday have an actual, provable answer.

The handful of scientists who work in this under-funded and politically charged field will tell you: That answer is a long way off. But as Lesley Stahl reports, their efforts are already yielding tantalizing clues. One focus of their research is twins.

The bedrooms of 9-year-old twins Adam and Jared couldn't be more different. Jared's room is decked out with camouflage, airplanes, and military toys, while Adam's room sports a pastel canopy, stuffed animals, and white horses...

Re: The Science Of Sexual Orientation

It says on the fourth page that for each older brother that you have your chances of bieng gay increase by 1/3.

"And the numbers are significant: for every older brother a man has, his chances of being gay increase by one third. Older sisters make no difference, and there's no corresponding effect for lesbians."

I have two older brothers than me but since they are both from my dad's previous marriage than wouldn't that not have any affect?

"The favorite hypothesis is that the mother may be making antibodies when she sees a boy the first time, and then affect subsequent boys when she carries them in utero."

Interesting article I must say.

Re: The Science Of Sexual Orientation

They almost always have to use twins when doing this kind of psychological-physiological testing...(twins studies )

It's hard to imagine having a twin; and if the other turned out gay, and our Genetic material is identical???

Re: The Science Of Sexual Orientation

how can you say that??

I hope you're joking, so what if your kid is gay?

That would be a trippy experience, I think.

Correlation does not prove causation.

Re: The Science Of Sexual Orientation

If I can influence the sexual orientation of my sons I would choose for it to be hetero. You are only homosexual if you engage in homosexual acts. Attraction is not orientation. Acting on the attraction is the orientation. It is a matter of values and impulse control. To say otherwise would legitimize ANY impulse to engage in any sexual act as being of that orientation. You are not a resident until you cross the border. Even if you wear the colors and sing the national anthem.

Re: The Science Of Sexual Orientation

haha ok well after reviewing your post once more i suppose i do agree with you,

"You are only homosexual if you engage in homosexual acts"

I guess this is true,
But homosexual acts are subjective,
teabagging could be considered a homosexual act,
others wouldn't consider it a homosexual act at all.

Re: The Science Of Sexual Orientation

and what about the flip side of that - what if you where gay but you where so ugly no guy/girl wanted you, so you never do a homosexual act, are they still gay?
