Syndactyly and Innsmouth

For a science assingment i chose the genetic disorder Syndactyly to do a project on.

After a bit of research i found some evidence that a town called Innsmouth may exist in New England which is apparently inhabited by a heap of people with a frog like appearance (spaced eyes, 'gill slits' on their necks - no function of course, webbed hands and feet - related to Syndactyly).

The problem is there have been several novels written on this and i am finding it hard to obtain any real information on them.

Does anyone have any information they can offer on these people? Are there any possible causes for this, such as geographic (eg. inbred from isolation - mountain ranges etc, or like a nuclear reactor nearby).

Do they actually exist?

Any help would be appreciated.

PS: heres a pic of one:

Not sure whether its a depiction or what....
