Difference between a software server(logical) and physical server(hardware)

Can someone please give me a clear definition(or tell me where to get one) of the difference between a software server and a hardware server? I'm trying to write something up to explain to people at work what it means to boot a software server vs. booting a hardware server. Logicaly I know the difference, but it's hard to explain.
Thanks!
