Re: Who's Afraid of a Solar Flare? The observation that high energy protons can cause an immediate physical health effect shows how important hydrogen bonding is to the continuiity of living state. Its disruption within the body by a shower of protons causes immediate holistic impact on cells and entire multicellular organisms. The long term effect of cosmic rays on the DNA shows the stability of the DNA molecule due to covalent bonding. The hydrogen bonding is more weak and more fundamental to the real time stability and activity of the entire cell and the entire multicellular organism.

Re: Who's Afraid of a Solar Flare? Could you not just energise an insulated high-temp superconducting magnetic coil around the ship? Yes, it would be tricky (due to the magnetic field) but it would provide a deflection system. Also, what if the solar event focuses the beams onto you, rather than bends them away? Will you suddenly be like an ant under a magnifiying glass?

Re: Who's Afraid of a Solar Flare? You didn't mention my favorite phenominon attributed to solar flares! (I hope i'm still up to date on this ) The Northern Lights! Which have been quite spectacular this year I might add! (Usually we only get green waves and pulsations but this year we got purple, red, and orange as well!!!!!!! Which looks marvelous over Lake Erie and the lights of Long Point, Canada! Which is a peninsula 16 miles to the north of here.
