| Re: Sci-Fi Life Support How does one approach 100% efficiency with a system like this? And how long can you do it for? Eventually, we're going to need to extract the water and oxygen from the Moon or Mars, just to cut the cord, so to speak. TFS |

| Re: Sci-Fi Life Support Actually, "ECLSS" has been around a lot longer than this recycling project. Space Station Freedom project began in 1985 or thereabouts, because I worked on the final proposal stage--I contributed to the Growth and Flexibility proposal and the Costing proposal. The acronym ECLSS was the same then as it is now. Its purpose was originally to recycle as much as possible from the atmosphere inside the station, but specific functions and abilities were cut back as it became apparent that weight, power, technology and cost limitations simply would not let us do what we wanted in the late 80's. The current International Space Station already has an ECLSS (inherited from the original SSF design) and always did. It monitors the internal atmosphere for excess levels of toxic gases (including CO2), inadequate oxygen, etc. The canisters that absorb CO2 are part of ECLSS, as are the fans, temperature control, etc. So, the project above must be an *advanced* ECLSS system. |
