There's no doubt that it is a cool image and one which requires some study to make sense of.
Imagine straightening/"un-curving" the image. The rock at the top would look much like the tabular rocks of the western US. It would look like a rectangular-topped mesa. Looking at where the sunlight is hitting, one can see that only the bottom portion of the rock is illuminated, giving the impression that there is compositional difference.
How exactly did you get to this image? What to the images taken before and after this one look like?
